Written almost two and half centuries ago in 1772, the words were written by John Newton as a testimony to his life. After his mother passed away when he was six-years-old, he grew up to became extremely rebellious and often fought against authority. In his twenties, he joined the Royal Navy and after being abandoned by his crew in West Africa, he was forced to be a servant to a slave trader. Eventually he was rescued and on his return voyage to England, a violent stom almost sank his ship! It was during this storm, when his spiritual journey began.

However, he became a slave ship master upon his return. After bringing slaves from Africa to England multiple times and after becoming violently ill during one of his voyages, he wholeheartedly gave up his life as a slave trader and devoted his life to spirituality. After actively advocating for the slave trade, he actively worked towards abolishing it! He was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1764 and penned 280 hymns - one of which was Amazing Grace!

Amazing Grace is one of the most recognizeable hymns in the world and this song is performed roughly 10 million times annually at numerous key moments in history!
